Materials and Production Processes

Each piece from TOA Handmade Bags is crafted using carefully selected materials from Ecuador’s most renowned regions. We use the finest toquilla straw from Montecristi and the best Ecuadorian leather from Cotacachi. These materials reflect the natural and cultural richness of Ecuador.

1. Harvesting the Toquilla Straw

Farmers on the coast cultivate the toquilla plants and harvest the stems, separating the fiber from the green outer layer. The fiber is boiled to remove the chlorophyll and then dried using charcoal and sulfur to bleach it.

2. Artisanal Weaving

In Montecristi, weavers craft extra-fine toquilla straw mats, which require specific climatic conditions and an exact number of stitches in each row of the weave. This process can take up to six months to complete.
